JOB TITLE
Vineyard Worker
PURPOSE
The overall responsibility of the vineyard worker is to ensure that the health and wellbeing of the plants are of a quality standard as well as ensure the general upkeep of the clients vineyard.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Plant Maintenance
- Shoot thinning – ensures that there are an adequate number of shoots per cane and that there is appropriate spacing between each shoot as required.
- Bud rubbing – ensures all the low growth from the bottom of the vines is removed as required.
- Leaf plucking – ensures any dead or rotten leaves are removed from the vine as required.
- Cluster thinning – ensures any excess clusters of grapes are removed if vines are too over-crowded.
- De-latering – ensures any lateral shoots are removed from around bunches of grapes as required.
- Wire Lifting – ensures all the wires are lifted onto the vines to keep the canopy upright as required.
- Wire dropping – ensures wires are dropped after pruning vines.
- Puts up and removes bird nets as and when required.
- Hand harvests as required.
- Trains young vines as required.
- Monitors for disease and ensures that disease pressure is kept at a minimum.
- Pruning – (4-5 months each year).
- VSP/Spur pruning • Assesses vines to ensure that any pruning activity is conducted according to the vigour of the plant.
- Determines the number of buds and canes that are needed for each vine.
- Physically prunes the plant.
- Strips out any pruned canes from the wires.
- Trims remaining canes and ensures they are clean and tidy.
- Ensures that each cane is tied down to the wire appropriately.
- Ensures all stripped canes are out from under the vines for mulching activity.
- Trellis Maintenance • Replacing wires.
- Nailing/Drilling Clips.
- Marking Posts.
- Irrigation Maintenance.
- Vineyard Development • Planting Vines.
- Running Wires.
- Clipping Irrigation – Lateral.
- Marking Posts.
- Vineguard installation.
Note: Some of these duties involve heavy lifting and repetitive bending.
